Mandalas and sacred geometry

Mandalas have been used in spiritual practice as a way to mediate on the nature of life and creation, and they are formed by repetitive geometric patterns that can be filled up and they can as well have strong meaning. The circle is considered the most basic shape of this sacred geometry, but we can also see mandalas representing flowers, stars, animals or even hearts. You can draw it yourself or even simply colour it, and you do not need to be an artist to create them as all you need to do is follow repetitive geometric patterns with some tools as an aid. (compass, ruler...)

What is sacred geometry?
Sacred geometry is the study of measures and proportions of energy and matter in relation to the principle of sustainability that creates life. Thus, Sacred Geometry is the model of creation and engenders all form.

Having said that, we could work at schools geometry by using mandalas, it is an original and creative way. We could introduce them by simply letting students draw them in the first levels as a way of using art as well. Then, we could try to recognize the geometric figures that compose mandalas and even form one with repetitive circles, triangles, etc.

In order to draw a mandala, you would need a compass and an organized plan. Besides, it can be used as well as a way to relax yourself and like a mindfulness therapy, as doing repetitive shapes make you feel calmer.
